Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind Review

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is a fun retro-style beat 'em up with co-op action, cool bosses & arcade vibes.

Some things just go perfectly together—like peanut butter and chocolate, popcorn and movie theaters… and honestly, Power Rangers and a 90s-style arcade beat ‘em up. It feels like this should’ve existed a long time ago, but somehow, we never really got that proper Power Rangers arcade game. Sure, there were a few SNES and Genesis beat ‘em ups, but they were limited by what consoles could do back then. We never got a full-on, four-to-six player arcade brawler. At least, not until now.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind finally brings that dream to life. It’s made by Digital Eclipse, and if you love games like Turtles in Time, X-Men, or The Simpsons arcade game, this is going to hit that nostalgic spot. It’s not perfect—there are a couple of gimmick sections that didn’t quite work for me—but overall, it’s a solid beat ‘em up that makes you want to suit up and fight side by side with the Rangers.

Now, I’ve always loved arcade-style brawlers, even if I’m not a huge Power Rangers fan. So trust me when I say—you don’t need to know all the lore to enjoy this game. The story is simple: in the future (the year 2023), Robo Rita teams up with her past self, Rita Repulsa, to take down the Power Rangers. The modern-day team can’t stop her, so the original 1993 crew steps in to save the day. Classic time travel chaos—and it works.

The game really nails the 90s arcade vibe. From the pixel art and CRT filter to the amazing guitar-heavy soundtrack, it feels like stepping into an old arcade. It reminded me of why I loved those classic games so much. The story doesn’t need to make perfect sense—it just needs to give you a reason to smash through waves of enemies. And that’s exactly what Rita’s Rewind does.

As for gameplay, it’s simple and fun. You’ve got your basic attacks, throws, double jumps, dodges, and a powerful super move when your meter’s full. It’s easy to pick up, especially if you’re playing with a friend. You can even pull off cool combos by working together, like juggling enemies mid-air. It’s not as deep as Streets of Rage 4, but that’s okay—it’s more about the fun, fast-paced action.

If you’re into retro-style beat ‘em ups or just want a cool Power Rangers game to play, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is worth checking out. It’s not perfect, but it finally gives us the arcade brawler that should’ve existed decades ago.

Rita’s Rewind: A Fun and Classic Beat ‘Em Up With a Few Twists

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is a three-hour beat ‘em up that sticks to what makes the genre so fun—simple gameplay, cool stages, and memorable boss fights. You play as the original Rangers (Red, Blue, Yellow, Black, and Pink). They don’t feel too different in gameplay, but they’re fun to use. The enemies are enjoyable to fight, the levels take you through places like a theme park and a toxic waste dump, and you’ll find fun unlockables and Easter eggs along the way.

What really makes the game shine is how smooth it feels to play. The combat is responsive, enemies keep you on your toes, and the boss fights—like the one with Bones or the silly fight against Chunky Chicken—are a blast. Co-op takes things up a notch. You can team up with up to six players locally (except on PlayStation, which supports four for now, but a six-player update is coming). Online co-op is also on the way, though it’ll be limited to two players at launch.

Beat ‘em ups are tricky—they need that “it” factor to feel great. And Rita’s Rewind has it. But the game doesn’t stop there. One of the best parts is the Super Scaler segments, where you jump into the Megazord, ride a motorcycle, or pilot your own Zord. These stages feel like a throwback to Space Harrier with 3D-style movement and fast-paced action.

You’ll race toward the screen, dodging bullets, smashing enemies, and grabbing power-ups like missiles or Double Shot. I really enjoyed the motorcycle sections—they’re fast and fun. But the Zord levels were a mixed bag. They look cool, but sometimes they’re just too hard. Missing a jump or taking one hit can cost you a life, and with all the action on screen, it’s easy to mess up. My co-op partner and I had to retry some Zord stages over and over.

When these sections work, they add variety and let each Ranger shine—like how the Pink Ranger’s pterodactyl can fly to dodge attacks. But when they don’t, they’re frustrating. Every time I lost all my lives, it was during a Zord stage.

Rita’s Rewind is a solid beat ‘em up that fans of the genre (and Power Rangers) should definitely check out. The core gameplay is fun, the co-op is exciting, and while a few segments could’ve been better, the good far outweighs the bad.

The Super Scaler levels are fun but not always consistent

The Megazord sections in Rita’s Rewind are an exciting part of boss fights, but they come with a few challenges. You can’t lose during these encounters, which is a plus, but the mechanics can be a bit frustrating. You pilot the Megazord from a first-person view, dodging attacks and landing punches to charge the Power Sword for the final blow. However, bosses can jump away when you get close, making it hard to land hits. In co-op, this can get repetitive if you’re not good at dodging.

While the Megazord battles are fun, they strangely add more to your score than the beat ‘em up levels, even though those are the game’s main focus.

The Super Scaler sections, like the rollercoaster ride or elevator fights, bring in variety. These parts introduce fun time travel mechanics that reset your super bar and encourage smarter combat. Some of these segments can be tough with random difficulty spikes, but overall, they make the game feel fresh and exciting.

Between missions, you hang out at the Juice Bar where you can talk to familiar characters like Bulk and Skull. A highlight here is the arcade games you can unlock and play. These are brand-new mini-games that feel like something the Power Rangers would enjoy in their free time. You unlock them by finding missing parts during levels. Each one is unique, and they’re fun to play between missions.

The only small issue is that you can’t switch Rangers at the Juice Bar. You have to go all the way back to the main menu to change characters, which can be a bit annoying. Still, Rita’s Rewind offers a lot of replay value. Beating the game unlocks the Green Ranger, and you can chase high scores, go for S-ranks, collect hidden items, and try out harder difficulties or speed runs. It’s a beat ‘em up that stays fun even after you finish the main story.
