Motorola Razr Plus review: Is the Razr Plus 2024 Worth the Hype?

Motorola Razr Plus 2024 is a colorful, unique flip phone that stands out from regular smartphones. It’s bright and fresh, offering a new take on the flip phone design. The improved cover display is larger, brighter, and lets you access apps easily without opening the phone. It’s compact, fun, and perfect for those who want something different.

Razr Plus also gets a durability boost with water resistance and a new vegan leather back with a suede feel, making it easier to hold. It has a stylish and premium look without being slippery.

However, phone’s AI functions have some problems. For such a costly gadget, it is disheartening that Moto AI technologies have been criticized for creating objectionable content. Prior to Razr Plus being highly recommended, Motorola must make improvements in this area.

With AI problems, Razr Plus 2024 remains a good phone. It is enjoyable to use & has a fantastic hinge for group photographs. It is also available in a striking shade of hot pink.

Motorola Razr Plus 2024 can be pre-ordered for $999.99, £999.99, or $1,699. Storage capacity is 256GB in the US and 512GB in the UK and Australia. It’s called Motorola Razr Plus 2024 in the US but same phone is known as Motorola Razr 50 Ultra in other countries.

At around $1,000 / £1,000 / AU$1,700, it’s in the same price range as Google Pixel 8 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 now costs more after a price hike, making Razr Plus 2024 a better deal in some regions.

However, with strong competition at this price, it’s worth waiting for a discount if you don’t need phone immediately. Razr Plus 2023 had great deals including a regular $300 off in the US. Whether Razr Plus 2024 will have similar discounts is uncertain, but the improvements aren’t major enough to rule out a price drop.

While this phone would be a better option if it were cheaper, at its current price, it faces competition in areas like camera quality, software support, and durability. If Motorola drops price by 25% or more, it could be a much more attractive choice.

Motorola Razr Plus Design

Motorola Razr Plus 2024 is a stylish, eye-catching phone available in vibrant colors like Spring Green and Hot Pink. It’s perfect for people who want something different from the typical smartphones. Design is sleek, with a ‘vegan leather’ back and a huge cover display that stretches across the front. Foldable inner screen feels smooth and almost seamless.

New folding mechanism is improved, making it easier and more satisfying to open and close phone. It also has IPX8 rating, meaning it’s water-resistant and can handle a dunk in water.

However, camera lenses on cover display can sometimes block important app buttons which can be a hassle. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a smaller cover display that doesn’t have this issue.

While ‘vegan leather’ back looks good, it’s important to note that it’s just a type of plastic, not necessarily an environmentally friendly material. Still, it’s durable and doesn’t fade or stain.

Razr Plus 2024 stands out in a crowd, and it’s a great phone if you want something unique. The only downside is that you can only pick one color but Motorola often releases new colors, so more options could be available soon.

Motorola Razr Plus Display

Motorola Razr Plus 2024 impresses with its larger, brighter displays. Outer screen is bigger than last year’s and adds to the phone’s appeal. Once you use it, you’ll realize no other flip phone compares.

Both displays are extremely bright. The inner screen reaches up to 3,000 nits, while the outer one can hit 2,400 nits, making them too bright at times—especially when checking messages at night.

Cover screen wraps around the camera lenses, giving it a unique look. However, sometimes the lenses block buttons on apps, like the Roku TV remote app. Still, it’s a more appealing design than Samsung’s cutout on the Galaxy Z Flip.

Foldable inner screen is flatter and the crease is barely noticeable. Even when I try to feel it, I can hardly detect it.

Motorola Razr Plus Software

Motorola Razr Plus 2024 runs on Android 14 with a clean interface, similar to Google Pixel 8. While it’s a solid phone overall, Motorola added some AI features that miss the mark.

Phone includes useful shortcuts like wrist gestures to open camera and toggle flashlight which work even when the phone is closed. It’s easy to take selfies with the cover display using these shortcuts.

But there are significant problems with adding Moto AI. AI wallpaper generators frequently produce rude and clichéd visuals. For example- it exclusively displayed pictures of young, white people when requested for a “happy person” or a “successful person.” When questioned about Jews or Palestinians, AI even produced stereotyped images.

These issues with Moto AI are concerning and it’s clear AI tool is not ready for use. It’s better to avoid using it altogether, as it’s more about reinforcing harmful stereotypes than offering creative or useful results.

Motorola Razr Plus Cameras

Motorola Razr Plus 2024 has fun and easy-to-use cameras but photo quality isn’t amazing.

You can record videos easily by folding phone halfway, and for selfies, just twist your wrist to see yourself on the cover display. The main cameras take better selfies than the front camera.

It’s great for creative shots like standing phone up on its own for unique angles. There’s also a Photobooth mode that takes four pictures in a row.

Photos look good but lack depth and blur in the background doesn’t look very natural. Camera struggles with close-ups and sometimes doesn’t focus well.

Motorola Razr Plus Performance

Motorola Razr Plus 2024 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip which is good but not the fastest available. While it performs similarly to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, it’s not as powerful as phones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy.

Phone runs smoothly for apps, games and movies. Features like camera gestures and moving apps between screens work without delay.

However, there were slowdowns and occasionally failed cloud connection attempts while using AI features like AI writing tools or wallpaper, which resulted in annoying delays.

Motorola Razr Plus Battery

Motorola Razr Plus 2024 has great battery life thanks to its Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip. With 4,000mAh battery, it lasts nearly 50% longer than Galaxy Z Flip 5, giving over 14 hours of use compared to Z Flip 5’s less than 10 hours.

It supports fast 45W charging, but you’ll need to buy a separate charger, as one isn’t included. This charger can quickly top up the battery in just 10 minutes.

However, there’s a bug where the phone repeatedly flashes the charging percentage during charging, both with wired and wireless chargers. Hopefully, a software update will fix this.
