Xiaomi Mix Flip Review

Xiaomi Mix Flip: Premium design, high-res screen, great cameras, and long battery life. A top choice for flip phone enthusiasts!

Xiaomi is making a splash in the flip foldable market with its new Mix Flip, entering right after Galaxy Flip, which is now in its sixth generation.

Xiaomi Mix Flip is sleek and stylish, featuring glass panels, an aluminum frame, and a stainless-steel hinge. It stands out with its 4-inch OLED display, offering a 120Hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision, which supports apps and widgets. This screen can also be used as a viewfinder for the rear cameras.

Main foldable screen is a 6.86-inch LTPO OLED with a 1224p resolution, 120Hz refresh rate and up to 3,000 nits brightness.

Powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip and available with 12GB or 16GB of RAM, the Mix Flip matches the performance of the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

It features a dual 50MP camera setup on the back: a 50MP OIS primary camera and a 50MP zoom camera with 2x optical zoom, 4x hybrid zoom and macro capability. Thereโ€™s no ultrawide lens but the primary lens should cover most needs.

With a large 4,780mAh battery and 67W fast charging, Mix Flip promises long-lasting use and quick recharges. Phone comes with a charger included.

Mix Flip runs on HyperOS and has launched in China, with a global release expected in August.

Design & Build Quality

  • Appearance: Xiaomi Mix Flip resembles other modern flip phones like Razr 50 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip6. When folded, it looks like a small, thick tile; when opened, it resembles a tall Xperia phone.
  • Back Panels: Mix Flip features two back panels with rounded edges, giving it a stylish look. Panel over 4-inch external OLED is made of scratch-resistant Xiaomi Dragon Crystal glass while other panel, covering battery, has a matte finish (unsure if it’s Dragon Crystal).
  • Frame: Phone’s frame is polished aluminum and can attract fingerprints easily due to its glossy surface.
  • Hinge: Hinge is thin, made of stainless steel and supports angles between 45ยฐ and 135ยฐ. It has matte finish and subtle Leica insignia with a satisfying click.
  • External Screen: 4-inch external screen called All Around Liquid Display, has minimal bezels and flows around two 50MP cameras. It offers a nice user interface.
  • Internal Screen: 6.86-inch foldable OLED display is bright, colorful and high-resolution. Crease is noticeable but not obtrusive. Screen has plastic bezel and built-in protector that should not be removed.
  • Front Camera: 32MP front camera is located in small cutout at top of internal screen.
  • Fingerprint Sensor: Located on side-mounted power/lock key, it’s easy to reach when phone is closed but a bit awkward when open due to its higher placement.
  • Speakers: It has stereo speakersโ€”one near USB-C port and quieter one in earpiece.
  • IR Blaster: There’s IR blaster at the top of the phone.
  • Dimensions: Mix Flip measures 167.5 x 74 x 7.6 mm and weighs 192 grams, similar to Galaxy Z Flip 6.
  • Drawbacks: Mix Flip lacks water protection and has a very slippery body. While it has a premium design, it may not be ideal for everyday use without a case to improve grip. Avoid using it around water to prevent damage.

Displays

  • Main Screen: 6.86-inch foldable LTPO OLED with 1,224 x 2,912 pixels (460 ppi), 22:9 aspect ratio. It supports 10-bit color, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10, Dolby Vision and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness.
  • External Screen: 4.01-inch OLED with 1,392 x 1,208 pixels (460 ppi). It uses Dragon Crystal glass and supports 12-bit color, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness.

Brightness:

  • Main Screen: Up to 1,314 nits with Sunlight Mode; 573 nits without.
  • External Screen: Up to 1,355 nits with Sunlight Mode; 540 nits without.
  • Refresh Rate:
  • Automatic Mode: Dynamic, up to 120Hz.
  • Custom Mode: 60Hz ceiling, adjusts between 1Hz and 60Hz.
  • HDR & Streaming: Certified for HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, compatible with major streaming services like Netflix.

Battery Life

  • Capacity: 4,780mAh.
  • Usage: About 12 hours of active use, comparable to Razr 50 Ultra. Good for web browsing, video streaming, and gaming.
  • Charging Speed: Supports 67W fast charging. Charges 41% in 15 minutes, 68% in 30 minutes, and full in 52 minutes. Includes options for optimized and limited charging.

Speakers

  • Setup: Stereo speakersโ€”one at the bottom and one in the earpiece.
  • Audio Quality: Good balance with decent bass, clear vocals, and high frequencies. The bottom speaker is louder and better in bass compared to the earpiece.

HyperOS and Android 14

  • OS: Xiaomi Mix Flip runs HyperOS, which is based on Android 14. It looks similar to MIUI but with a few design updates.
  • Interface: Itโ€™s user-friendly with improved multi-window controls and customizable quick settings.
  • AI Features: Includes tools like AI Image and AI Magic Erase Pro for photo editing. Some features need to be downloaded.
  • Outer Screen: Customizable with different lockscreen styles and widgets like weather and calendar.
  • Apps: Supports various outer screen apps for tasks like checking the calendar or watching videos.
  • Internal Screen: Foldable and flexible but only some apps are optimized for different viewing angles.

Performance and Benchmarks

  • Chip: Powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, available with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage.
  • Benchmarks: High performance but slightly lower CPU scores compared to the Galaxy Z Flip6.
  • Heat: Good CPU stability, but can overheat during heavy use, affecting gaming performance.

Overall, Mix Flip is powerful but may overheat with heavy use.

Camera

Xiaomi Mix Flip offers a versatile camera setup but the internal 32MP selfie camera might be more than necessary. Phone features two 50MP cameras on the back: one for wide-angle shots and another for telephoto zoom. Main camera delivers excellent daytime photos with rich details, vibrant colors and a wide dynamic range. The telephoto lens provides good quality shots with 2x optical zoom, though the 4x hybrid zoom can be a bit soft.

In low-light conditions, the main camera performs well with clear and detailed images, thanks to its Night Mode. The telephoto lens also captures decent low-light photos, though they can become softer due to noise reduction. While the internal 32MP selfie camera takes good quality selfies, using the main cameras for selfies provides even better results.

๐Ÿ‘Pros๐Ÿ‘ŽCons

๐Ÿ”Š Good speakers๐Ÿšซ

Conclusion

Xiaomi is making great strides with Mix Flip. It includes many features we wish for in a Galaxy Z Flip, like a high-resolution Dolby Vision screen, Leica-enhanced cameras with better zoom and close-ups, improved battery life, and faster charging. These upgrades make it an attractive option.

However, there are a couple of drawbacks: it lacks water resistance and can experience GPU overheating. The limited availability is another concern. While Xiaomi can fix the overheating issue with software updates, it canโ€™t add water resistance.

Overall, Mix Flip is a strong contender in the flip phone market, offering excellent screens and cameras.
