Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is a powerful gaming laptop with excellent performance, a large display, and responsive controls.

If you’re looking for a powerful gaming laptop, 2023 Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is a great choice. It has a fast AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, so it can run any game at high settings.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 Design

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is a large and sturdy gaming laptop, though it’s not the biggest or heaviest in its class. Weighing 6.61 pounds and measuring 15.55 x 11.1 x 0.92 inches, it’s similar in size to the Asus ROG Strix G18 but slightly smaller. It’s lighter than competitors like the Alienware m18 and 7.05-pound Razer Blade 18, making it a bit easier to handle, though still quite hefty.

This laptop is best used on a desk or table. Its size, weight and bottom ridges can make lap use uncomfortable and it may get warm during heavy use.

Design is sleek for a gaming laptop, with a black frame and customizable RGB lighting under the keys and palm rest. It’s not overly flashy but still stands out.

Scar 17 has ports conveniently placed mostly at the back, including power, HDMI, Ethernet and two USB-C ports. On the left side, you’ll find a headphone jack & two USB-A ports offering plenty of connectivity options for gamers.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 Display

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 features huge, vivid 17.3-inch QHD display that is ideal for gaming and multitasking. With a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution and an IPS LCD panel, it provides clear pictures and rich colors. The 240Hz frame rate and 3ms reaction time ensures seamless gameplay with little latency.

While the screen’s brightness is average at 301.6 nits, which is lower than other competitors, it nevertheless produces accurate colors with 115.2% sRGB and 81.6% DCI-P3 ratings.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 Gaming Performance

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 is a powerful gaming laptop with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU. It can run any game smoothly, even at the highest settings.

In tests, it reached 159 fps in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and 176 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. While the Alienware m18 was a bit faster in some cases, Scar 17 still performed well especially in Grand Theft Auto V.

It ran Fortnite at max settings with a smooth 60 fps. For a demanding game like Cyberpunk 2077, it got 52 fps without DLSS 3 and 93 fps with DLSS 3, offering great graphics and smooth gameplay.

Fans can get loud during intense gaming, but the performance is worth it. Scar 17 can handle all kinds of games with ease.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 General Performance

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 isn’t just for gaming—it’s super fast for other tasks too. With its AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX processor and 32GB RAM, it handles multitasking, apps, and everyday work with ease.

In tests, it scored 19,405 in Geekbench 5.5, beating laptops like the Alienware m18 (18,070) and Razer Blade 18 (14,070). This makes it one of the fastest laptops we’ve seen.

However, it wasn’t as quick in file transfer tests, managing 1,185 MBps, which is slower than some rivals.

For video editing, it converted 4K video to 1080p in 2 minutes and 47 seconds—slightly slower than Alienware m18 but faster than the Razer Blade 18.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 17- Audio, Keyboard and Touchpad, Webcam and Battery

Audio: Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 has decent speakers that get loud and clear, but they lack bass and can sound a bit flat. When used on your lap, the downward-firing speakers can get muffled. For better sound, it’s recommended to use headphones or external speakers.

Keyboard and Touchpad: Keyboard is an improvement over the Strix G18, with more space for the arrow keys, making it easier to use. The keys feel responsive and tactile. Large touchpad is also responsive, though a gaming mouse is preferred for gameplay.

Webcam: 720p webcam isn’t great, producing fuzzy and washed-out images. It’s fine for casual calls but for better quality, especially for streaming or professional use, an external camera is recommended.

Battery Life and Heat: While gaming, battery lasts only about 1:24, so you’ll need to keep it plugged in. For light use, you can get around 4 hours of battery life. Laptop gets quite hot with temperatures reaching 125.5°F under heavy use, so it’s not comfortable for long sessions on your lap.

Pros and Cons of Asus ROG Strix Scar 17
